Don't Quit

I'm preparing for a goal setting workshop I'll be presenting for all of our North Shore WAC members and a few days ago was looking for a motivational piece that people could turn to when they hit obstacles.

I've heard this poem before and had to share it with all of you. I hope this motivates and inspires you to not give us and keep working to overcome whatever mountain you're currently climbing or whatever obstacle lays in your path. [YouTube version]

DON'T QUIT

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you are trudging seems all up hill;

When funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh;

When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns.

And many a failure turns about
When we might have won had we stuck it out;

Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.

And you can never tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you MUST NOT QUIT

  1. Well, I can say from experience Don't Quit. In 2000 I was 20 and was struck by an inattentive driver while out cycling on a training ride. Broke my back, ribs, ankle, and suffered head trauma. I was paralyzed for hours and told I might never walk again. In the last 3 years I have had 3 major back surgeries with 22 screws, 4 rods, and 2 plates put into my spine. Between surgeries I ran a 3:16 marathon and qualified for the Boston Marathon. I am now running daily, racing, and preparing for for my first 50 mile ultra-marathon. I also speak to groups about overcoming adversity and perseverance.

  2. Cristin -

    Wow! What a story of overcoming a seemingly insurmountable obstacle! Thank you for sharing.

    I'm sad to hear about what happened, but happy to hear you haven't let it slow you down and are using it to inspire and motivate others.

    God Bless you!
